The school admission process in the country’s capital and nearby cities is nothing short of winning an Olympic gold as the confused parents run through the gut-wrenching qualifying rounds. While the child’s admission hangs in balance, parents are racking their brains to somehow collect enough points so that their bundle of joy can make it to one of the prestigious schools in the city. The schools can’t interview the child but you could make or lose points on something as arbitrary as whether you live in a joint family to how your beliefs match the school’s value system. Most of the criteria are vague and parents run around the city to apply in tens of schools to secure a seat for their 3 year olds.
Filling the school form alone is no joke with questions like how the parent will contribute to the child’s education. Puzzled parents run between schools and courts (sometimes the LG’s office) to get some justice. In a country where we proudly talk about free and compulsory education, there’s no telling whether your little one will be able to get admission in a so-called-prestigious school the coming year.
Many parents and teachers of struggling students complain of feeling helpless as the student is not willing to help him/herself. Every student carries the responsibility to excel at academics, co-scholastic and extra-curricular activities to the best of their ability. In addition, students need to behave responsibly and maintain decorum in school. At the same time, they have the right to talk about their struggles with teachers and parents and ask for support. Students can also be with other students and adults who can help them.
The parent’s role in the child’s education doesn’t stop with getting him/her admission in a good school. Parents should be active participants in the education process. Here’s how you can contribute to your kid’s education. For instance, parents can use the parent-teacher conferences to work closely with their children's school teachers to work out ways to contribute to their child's education. While teachers educate and work with children at school, parents can help to expand upon that learning at home.
In addition, it’s the parents’ job to stay updated about the child’s behavior and peers. Your child may encounter problems which are a hindrance to studies. Have a healthy friendly relationship with your children so that they can immediately share anything of concern with you.
